Why we love this place

Potenza is the capital of Basilicata — Italy's highest regional capital at 819 metres. And it has the oldest Lucanian diaspora organization in the US.

Potenza is the capital of the Basilicata region — Italy’s highest regional capital at 819 metres above sea level, overlooking the Basento Valley in the Apennine Mountains. Known as the “city of staircases” for its vertical urban plan, it is home to Europe’s longest public escalator system — the Santa Lucia Escalators, roughly 500 metres long, descending 100 metres through the hillside.

The Historic Centre

The elegant old town spans a narrow ridge, traversed by Via Pretoria — the main street — with Piazza Pagano and Piazza Matteotti at either end. Landmarks include the Cathedral of San Gerardo (medieval, with its original Romanesque rose window), the Torre Guevara (the last remnant of the old castle, now an art exhibition space), and the Palazzo Loffredo (17th-century, housing the National Archaeological Museum).

The National Archaeological Museum

The Museo Archeologico Nazionale della Basilicata “Dinu Adamesteanu” is housed in the 17th-century Palazzo Loffredo. Its collection spans the region’s entire archaeological heritage — from prehistoric settlements through Magna Graecia to the Roman period. Among its treasures is the Hercules Acheruntinus, a bronze statue from Acerenza.

The Parata dei Turchi

Every May 29th, Potenza stages the Parata dei Turchi — a costumed historical procession commemorating a 15th-century Turkish raid and the city’s defence under the protection of San Gerardo. Hundreds of participants in Ottoman and medieval dress march through the streets in one of Basilicata’s most spectacular festivals.

History

Roman origins as Potentia — the city sided with Hannibal’s enemies and was captured by the Romans in 216 BC. Lombard Duchy of Benevento, Norman conquest, nearly destroyed by Charles I in the 13th century. The city rebelled during the Neapolitan Republic in 1799 and became the French capital of Basilicata in 1806. Devastating earthquakes struck in 1273, 1857, 1943 (Allied bombing), and 1980.

The Diaspora Connection

The St. Rocco Society of Potenza, founded in New York in 1889, is the oldest Lucanian diaspora organization in the United States. They still own the original 1889 San Rocco statue — the same statue that appeared in The Godfather. The first Italian festa in the United States, in 1888, was organized by the Potenza Society at St. Joachim’s Church in Five Points, Manhattan.
